Hi friend! G and I celebrated our 4-year anniversary on Wednesday. We kept it low-key, which included seeing a movie (Project Hail Mary, anyone?) and eating pizza. Neither one of us prefers fancy evenings. Homemade Ice CreamWe did, however, end the evening with some homemade ice cream. G LOVES ice cream. I always liked it ok before getting married, but now, he and I have ice cream more times in a month than I previously would in a year. Being a make-it-from-scratch enthusiast, I told G we needed to start making our own. At first, he gave me that are we buying another appliance? look. Luckily, I convinced him that it's technically just an attachment since Kitchen-Aid came out with an ice cream bowl. Totally different. He was ok with it. We paired that with some homemade whey caramel and leftover M&M's from the movies. (BTW, who doesn't eat all of their movie candy?! This was unusual for us.) Spring is SpriningThe current equinox is helping my sleep hygiene. A sensible 9 pm - 6 am sleep cycle is kind of dreamy (pun intended). I woke up warm the other night, so I propped my window open, and the breeze felt amazing. Can somebody confirm for me whether it is legal to leave your 5-pound dog outside barking at 2 AM NONSTOP for over an hour? Asking for a friend who likes their windows open at night. I got my broccoli and celery planted out. We put a few extra plants into containers on the deck, and not 24 hours later, the soil had been rummaged through by our friendly neighborhood squirrels. Fresh dirt is their playground. Good thing we had extra. Some Substack musingsIn case you aren't subscribed to my Substack, I've got a few new essays over there on time, perfection, and cyclical living. Would love to see you over there! I hope that your Easter holiday is magical, Jodie |
Hi friends! Fall in Michigan has been kind of magical lately. Cool nights and mornings, days in the 60s and 70s, plenty of sunshine, and all the autumn color you could ask for. I've been spending a few hours each week reclaiming some overgrown garden plots in one of our community spaces. The plots sit alongside a fence surrounded by thick brush, which provides privacy from the houses beyond. Unfortunately, it's also the perfect place for seeds to take over. I've been making it my mission to...
Hi friend! As you may know, sourdough is one of my loves. The baking process brings me pure joy (not to mention the warm bread that results!). I often hear people say that they think sourdough is too much of a time investment, or that it’s too complicated. But I have to say, neither of those things has to be true. There is a learning curve, of course. But once you get the hang of it, sourdough is actually pretty easy to incorporate into your rhythm. Over the years, I’ve learned that a big...
Hi Friends! It's been a busy month over here as we have expanded the garden and are working hard on all the outdoor projects before the summer heat comes in full swing. We are building a sustainable, permaculture-style design that makes the most of our tiny space. This year, we acquired jostaberries, wild strawberries, rhubarb, Jerusalem artichokes, ground nuts, gooseberries, walking onions, and an elderberry tree. Sprinkled in are some perennial flowers and fruiting shrubs like blueberry,...
