Reflecting on the seasonal shift

Hi friend,

August has a way of whirling past us in the busyness of harvest and back-to-school. Suddenly, it's September and it feels like the summer is gone in a flash.

I forget how quickly the daylight shrinks this time of year. Not that I’m complaining, I love a good early evening. But with that, the morning sun arrives later too. Soon the night will outpace the day, and it can feel as though time itself is slipping past us.

As we prep our gardens, save seeds, and preserve the harvest, I want to invite you to step into the darkness with ease.

What if we slowed down enough to savor the season’s offering? Instead of using artificial light to stretch the day, what if we lit a candle and paused to reflect?

As the equinox approaches, it feels like the right moment to consider the slow rituals that carry us into the cooler, darker season. For me, it’s going to bed with the sun. I love when night falls around 8:30 or 9, my sweet spot. When it sets at 5, well, that’s a bit harder. Still, I enjoy the rhythm of earlier nights, waking refreshed and ready for the day. I can feel the shift of a new season all around me.

What might a ritual be for you? Maybe it’s pouring a cup of tea, jotting down a thought or two, or lighting a candle and enjoying the silence.

How are you embracing the seasonal shift?

Here's to slowing down,

Jodie

It's the equinox, friends! Are we ready for the shift? I am and sort of not. Fall is my favorite season for many reasons, and the equinox marks the start of it. So that's great. The darker mornings are a bit harder for me to get going, but the early evenings are the BEST! My husband doesn't understand me when I say that it should always be dark by 9 pm. Who is with me?? I love the way God designed the earth with these built-in rhythms. The darker and cooler season calls for cozy sweaters,...

Hi friends, If your garden is anything like mine, you've got loads of amazing green herbs on full display right now! I've got an abundance of basil, so I have been make a ton of pesto and thought I'd share with you how I make it, use it, and preserve it. Let's go! How to Make Pesto Pesto is perhaps one of the easiest things to make. You only need a few ingredients and a blender. Herbs of choice (basil is the classic, but carrot tops, radish tops, parsley, and chives all work well!) Olive oil...

Hi Friends! It's mid-summer and I am knee-deep in all the garden things. The weather finally started to cool down (mid-80s is a welcome change from mid-90s!). The tomatoes are coming in, zucchini is full out, peppers had a sad summer, don't get me started on the beans, and I overdid the basil this year (sounds blasphemous, I know!). Stay tuned for some pesto ideas! One of our community garden plots (black and pinto beans, zucchini, onions, basil, lavender, giant marigolds) I had a thought...
